Permanent Bollards – How They Really Work

At AML Risk Management we are aware of a wide range of professional Bollards and Crash Barriers.

Today we feature another well engineered product from the UK. The concrete blocks laid out in all Australian Capital Cities are not truly Bollards. As Crocodile Dundee would say ‘This is a Bollard!’

There really is no reason why City Councils in Australian cities do not install permanent effective hydraulic and mechanical bollards. The equation on cost is simply not applicable when one looks at the carnage that occurred on Bourke St in Melbourne, January 2017.

Regular and approved users of restricted pedestrian areas, such as trams, buses, some delivery vehicles and emergency vehicles can be fitted with sensors which lower then raise the bollards after the vehicle passes. These have been in operation, in cities such as Manchester, for some time in the UK.

The real issue is where ‘temporary crowds’ gather in places not equipped to manage vehicles or pedestrian traffic effectively. This can include sporting events, concerts, outdoor entertainment, marathon runs, race meetings and a number of other specific occasions where large crowds gather and frankly become potential targets.
